What is ListAndRename?
ListAndRename is a Windows desktop tool to list files/folders, export lists (XLSX/CSV/TXT), and rename files/folders in bulk using a prepared list.
Which Windows versions are supported?
Windows 10 and Windows 11 are supported.
What screen resolution or scale is recommended?
Minimum 1024×720 at 100% scale. Higher resolutions/scales are supported.
How do I launch the application?
Open it from the Start menu or search for “ListAndRename”; you can also pin it to Start/Taskbar.
Does ListAndRename modify file contents?
No. It only lists and renames files/folders; file contents are never changed.
Does the app require administrator rights?
No. Standard user rights are fine. Admin rights may be needed only for protected locations you choose to access.
Listing, Filtering & Sorting
How do I create a list of files and folders?
Drag and drop a folder onto the app, or click Browse. The app scans the folder using current filters.
Can I drag and drop a folder to list contents?
Yes. Drag a folder from File Explorer onto the app window to populate the list quickly.
How do I filter items by name or extension?
Use filters like Name contains, Starts with, Ends with, and Exclude extensions, then regenerate the list.
Can I include subfolders (recursive listing)?
Yes, enable the checkbox to include subfolders to recursively list items.
Can I sort or group the list?
Yes, sort by columns such as Name, Type, Size, Date, or Parent. Grouping by type/extension is available in settings.
How do I list only files of specific type?
Use the type filter to include or exclude files type.
Renaming
How can I prepare a list for renaming?
Enable checkbox Prepare for Renaming before generating the list; the export will include a New Name column.
How do I update new file names in Excel or CSV?
Open the exported XLSX/CSV, edit the New File/Folder Name column, save, and import/drop the file to application via Rename Option ('Drop Rename Data File or Click' button) .
Should I include file extensions in the new names?
It is not necessary. But make sure you keep extensions in next column unchanged unless you intend to change them. Removing/altering extensions can change how files open in Windows.
Can I change file extensions in bulk?
Yes. Edit the extension column in the exported list intentionally and re-import. Be careful—changing extensions can affect how files open.
What happens if a new name is identical to the current name?
That row is ignored—no change is made.
What if there are duplicate target names in my rename list?
Duplicates cause conflicts. The app reports them; fix the list to ensure unique targets and retry.
Can I rename folders as well as files?
Yes. If both were listed, both will appear in the export and can be renamed.
Can I rename locked or inaccessible files?
No. Files in use, missing, or blocked by permissions are skipped and logged.
How do I cancel a renaming operation in progress?
Use the abort button seen on the application, the application with cancel remaining action. Results are recorded in the log.
How do I revert changes if I made a mistake?
If you renamed files incorrectly, don’t worry. Check Column A in your old list for the original names. Generate a new file list, replace the incorrect names with the originals, and run the rename process again to restore the correct names.
Saving & Export
Which formats can I export to?
XLSX, CSV, and TXT are supported.
What is Auto Save?
When checkbox is enabled, the app auto-saves the generated list to your chosen formats/locations without additional prompts.
How do I choose the save location?
Use settings: Default (parent folder), Last Used, or a Custom path.
How are output files named?
The file name is derived from the source folder/action along with settings for file name suffix, prefix, date time.
What if a file with the same name already exists?
A numeric suffix (
0001
, 0002
, …) is appended to the name to avoid overwriting, or you can pick another name/location.Can I change the CSV delimiter?
CSV uses commas by default. You can open in Excel and save with a different delimiter if needed. (For rename operation, Only XLSX and CSV can be used)
Settings & Preferences
Can I change columns or layout?
No. The layout for output file and application listview is is fixed.
Does the app remember my last options?
Yes. Last settings are saved while closing the application and it opens with same settings.
Can I export only selected rows?
No. The file include all records listed.
Errors & Logs
Where are the logs stored?
Application logs are saved in
%LOCALAPPDATA%\Temp
with names like yyyy_MM_ddListAndRename_Log.txt
.How long are logs kept?
Old logs (about 30 days) are cleaned up automatically.
How can I review rename errors?
Use the View Log on rename status screen after a rename run to review skipped/conflicted items.
Subscription & Add-ons
What’s included in the free version?
Basic listing is included. Saving to Excel/CSV requires an add-on or active trial.
How do I purchase or activate add-ons?
Open the in-app add-on link (About Screen). Click link to reach addon screen. Click respective button to open Microsoft Store page and complete purchase. Licenses are linked to your Microsoft account logged in during this process. After you have completed purchase, the feature will get activated on your application
Do add-ons work offline?
The app works offline, but initial activation and periodic validation require internet to verify the Store license.
Advanced & Troubleshooting
How do I unprotect an Excel sheet to edit the rename column using Excel features?
In Excel sheet, right-click the tab at bottom → Unprotect Sheet.
Why does the app warn me about an old or mismatched rename list?
Rename lists should match the current folder state. If files moved/changed, refresh and re-export to avoid wrong mappings.
What if the rename data file came from another PC?
Drive letters/paths might differ. Ensure the same structure or create the list on the current machine.
How do I handle files without extensions in the rename list?
These files are listed as they are. Application does not change any thing on such files.
Large folders feel slow to list—any tips?
Refine filters, disable recursion, or process in smaller batches. Exporting subsets can help.
Why are some files skipped during rename?
Typical causes: duplicate target names, permission issues, files in use, or missing items. Check the log for details, fix, and retry.
How do I verify what changed after a rename?
Compare a fresh post-rename list with the original export; also see the log for not processed items.
How do I reset settings to defaults?
Use the reset button on right bottom corner.
